Each of these souls is considered of equal value and should be treated with respect and compassion.<\/li>\n<li>Jains are strict vegetarians and live in a way that minimises their use of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/living\/aparigraha.shtml\">world&#8217;s resources<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Jains believe in\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/beliefs\/reincarnation.shtml\">reincarnation<\/a>\u00a0and seek to attain ultimate liberation &#8211; which means escaping the continuous cycle of birth, death and rebirth so that the immortal soul lives for ever in a state of bliss.<\/li>\n<li>Liberation is achieved by eliminating all\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/beliefs\/karma.shtml\">karma from the soul<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Jainism is a religion of self-help.<\/li>\n<li>There are no\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/beliefs\/god.shtml\">gods<\/a>\u00a0or spiritual beings that will help human beings.<\/li>\n<li>The three guiding principles of Jainism, the &#8216;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/beliefs\/threejewels.shtml\">three jewels<\/a>&#8216;, are right belief, right knowledge and right conduct.<\/li>\n<li>The supreme principle of Jain living is non violence (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/living\/ahimsa_1.shtml\">ahimsa<\/a>).<\/li>\n<li>This is one of the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/living\/\">5 mahavratas<\/a>\u00a0(the 5 great vows). The other mahavratas are non-attachment to possessions, not lying, not stealing, and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/living\/brahmacarya.shtml\">sexual restraint<\/a>\u00a0(with celibacy as the ideal).<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/history\/mahavira.shtml\">Mahavira<\/a>\u00a0is regarded as the man who gave Jainism its present-day form.<\/li>\n<li>The texts containing the teachings of Mahavira are called the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/texts\/texts.shtml\">Agamas<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Jains are divided into\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/religion\/religions\/jainism\/subdivisions\/subdivisions.shtml\">two major sects<\/a>; the Digambara (meaning &#8220;sky clad&#8221;) sect and the Svetambara (meaning &#8220;white clad&#8221;) sect.<\/li>\n<li>Jainism has no priests.
